The 42nd Filmfare Awards was celebrated in the year 1997 in Mumbai. Veteran actor Dharmendra and Mumtaz won the lifetime achievement award at the glittering ceremony. Dharmesh Darshan won the best film award for ‘ Raja Hindustani’. Actor Aamir Khan and actress Karishma Kapoor won the best actor and best actress award for the same film. Gulzar’s film ‘Maachis’, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film 'Khamoshi: The Musical' too won numerous nominations and a few awards.
It was an achievement year for Rekha, Manisha Koirala, Karishma, Govinda and Aamir Khan. Shekhar Kapoor’s film ‘ Bandit Queen’ fetched him the best director award of the year. Even actress Seema Biswas won the best female debut award for ‘Bandit Queen’ and newcomer Chandrachur Singh won the best debut male award for 'Maachis'. Renowned director Gulzar won the best story writer and best dialogue writer award for ‘Maachis’.
It was sad that actress Tabu missed the chance of winning an award for the same film. Rajkumar Santoshi won the best screenplay award for film 'Ghatak: Lethal'. Amrish Puri won the best supporting actor award for his role in the same film ('Ghatak: Lethal'). Glamorous Rekha won the 'best-supporting-actress' trophy for film ‘Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi’. Satish Kaushik won the best comedian actor for' Saajan Chale Sasural' and actor Arbaaz Khan won the best villain award for an adverse role in the film 'Daraar'.
Nadeem-Shravan won the best music director award for film 'Raja Hindustani' and singer Udit Narayan won the best male playback singer award for song 'Pardesi Pardesi'. Javed Akhtar won the best lyricist award for song ‘Ghar Se Nikalte Hi' for the film 'Papa Kehte Hai'. Kavita Krishnamurthy won the best female playback singer award for song ‘Aaj Main Upar’ for the film ‘Khamoshi- The Musical’. Manisha Koirala won the best critics award for her performance in the film ‘‘Khamoshi- The Musical’.
The film ‘‘Khamoshi- The Musical’ won the best film (critics) award for Sanjay Leela Bhansali. R.D. Burman Award went to music director Vishal Bhardwaj for film ‘Maachis’. In the technical category, best film editor award went to V.N. Mayekar for the film ‘Ghatak’. Best ‘action award’ went to Akbar Bakshi for the film ‘Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi’. Nitin Desai won the best art direction award and Jitendra Chowdhary won the best sound award was for same film ‘Khamoshi: The Musical’.
The film ’'Ghatak: Lethal' had won the best screenplay award for Rajkumar Santoshi. Best cinematographer award for Ashok Mehta for film ‘bandit Queen’. Chinni Prakash won the best choreographer award for song 'Shaher Ki Ladki' in the film ‘ Rakshak’. Filmmaker Goutam Ghose’s film ‘Beyond the Himalayas’ had won the best documentary award of the year. Veteran artists of Bollywood Nasir Hussain, Pran, Shobhna Samarth and even Govinda, had a mention of ‘special award’ at the 42nd Filmfare Awards. Sanjana Kapoor anchored the show.
