Tarabai is a maid at Khursheed’s and Almas’ luxurious flat. Her eyes are so bright and look everything around her with amazement. It has been just a few months working for Begum Almas. She keeps staring at things in such a manner that she has never dreamed of such luxury. She is a child widow of a village in Gorakhpur. After the demise of her parents and father-in-law, her uncle, who is a milkman in Mumbai, called her. It’s just three-four months for the marriage of Almas Begum and Khursheed. Almas Begum finds her perfect in every way and appoints her. Almas Begum loves her husband, Khursheed to such an extent that she will not let him disappear from her sight even for a moment. Tarabai brings tea in the bedroom every morning, polishes her master’s shoes, irons clothes, and other domestic works in the house. She touches the beautiful things with astonishment. She gets so amazed to see the violin his master brought from Paris. When one day, she was cleaning the violin Khursheed came in and started shouting on her why she touched it and snatched the violin from her. Tarabai gets shocked, and tears roll down her eyes. Almas Begum comes there and tells her to move aside.

 Khursheed is a handsome man, and thus he was popular among ladies. After marriage, begum imposed certain restrictions on him. Begum watches over his husband strictly. Khursheed accepted all the restrictions from her happily. Begum is extremely wealthy, and Khursheed is too employed in begum’s company. Before marriage, he was too poor and went to Paris to pursue engineering on the base of a scholarship. When he returned, he used to search for employment but could not get any. Begum’s family gave him a job. Khursheed Aalam was a gentleman and an amateur violinist, but since he gets married to begum Almas, he didn’t touch the violin as begum hated it. Khursheed was grateful to his wife as his life changed completely after the marriage. Once lying in the crumbling building, Khursheed now lives in Kambala hill being a millionaire. Khursheed is from Uttar Pradesh. He was not ready for marriage because a Parsi girl, Firoza Jahangir Dastoor is waiting for him. Almas’ aunt Begum Usmani told her father about Khursheed, and thus Almas’ father hired Khursheed for fifteen hundred rupees a month in one of his firms and increased his meetings with Almas. He didn’t show any affection towards Almas. Khursheed stood in the balcony facing the sea and thought that one day he would be able to get off all these and meet his love. She also could come over, but she was there to complete her work at the college in Paris. Both used to write letters to each other every third day. In the last letter, he had informed her about a well-settled job in Mumbai and didn’t mention all the toxic things of his job.

A year passed like this, but he didn’t show any intention to marry Almas. Finally, Usmani Begum decided to talk over this. Meanwhile, Khursheed received a telegram from his home town Pratapgarh that his father is seriously ill, so he took a leave from his job and moved to his father. One day, Almas went to attend a concert by a pianist. By an acquaintance, Almas invited her to home. They both shared teas. Firoza introduced her and told Almas that she went to Paris to study piano for seven years, that her parents died very early, and she was brought up by her uncle and aunt. She says that her uncle is a retired clerk in a bank. Firoza was a simple girl. She came back to look after her age-stricken uncle and aunt. Almas developed quite a close friendship with Firoza. Firoza got a job of teaching piano in a convent college and also tuition to teach piano to a ten-year-old American girl. One day, walking with Almas in her garden, Firoza told her about her fiancé. Almas starts to inquire about him. Firoza named her fiancé as Khursheed Aalam and that he is an amateur violinist, and he has moved to his hometown as his father is not well. To these, Almas replied her; to their coincidence, her fiancé’s name is also Khursheed Aalam, he also came from Paris and he also plays the violin. Firoza’s heart broke listening to all these, and she can relate to all these. She left the place and took a bus home.

Khursheed and Almas’ engagement was planned. It was raining heavily, the telephone rang. Almas answered the call, there was a nurse on the opposite end, and she wanted to speak to Khursheed as Firoza was very ill for a month, and now she is in a critical stage, but Almas denied and told that Khursheed is not present. The phone rang again for Dr. Siddiqui, and he left the place out of an emergency at the hospital.

One morning, Dr. Siddiqui visits Almas and Khursheed. He sees Tarabai there and asks her if she works there to which she nodded in affirmation. She reveals the story of Tara to Khursheed and Almas that Tara lost her eyes at the age of ten and how a beautiful Parsi girl with exhilarating eyes donates her eyes to Tarabai after her death. Listening to Dr. Siddiqui, Almas’ face gets pale. Khursheed realizes that his love’s eyes are with Tarabai. Khursheed, being staggered feet like a blind man, runs towards her. Tarabai didn’t understand anything and thus goes into the kitchen. Then Khursheed plays the violin, remembers Firoza, and cries.
