Amar Chitra Katha or immortal captivating pictures is a series of animated shows for children. The series is based on the comics by the same name created by AnantPai. The series was produced by ACK Media. While primarily produced in Hindi it was dubbed into multiple languages. The show is inspired by the large number of comics released under the same name. They were created by AnantPai in 1980’s to teach children about Indian history.

To make it appealing to the modern era, the comics were commissioned into a television series. The inspiration behind Amar Chitra Katha was the fact that Indian children knew a lot about Greek and Roman mythology but could seldom answer basic questions about Indian history. Amar Chitra Katha was Pai’s effort to educate the masses more about the same. The series is based on various ancient and sacred texts in the Indian and Hindu culture – the Upanishads, Vedas, Panchatantra, Ramayana, Mahabharatha, etc.

The show is is a series of animated episodes that try to bring these characters to life for children. Panchatantra is a vast collection of fables and tales that attempt to give moral values through stories. Most of these stories are completely unrelated. Ramayana is a Hindu epic that chronicles the life of the human avatar of the Vishnu god – Rama. Ramayana is a large text, but the most famous part is the story of Rama and how he rescues Sita, his wife from the evil clutches of Lord Ravana. The text is a sacred part of Hinduism and is often used as a guide to be a better human. Mahabharatha is another such epic which includes the tales of Krishna, the Pandava brothers, and the Kauravas. Krishna was another avatar of the Hindu God, Vishnu on earth.

The tale follows Pandavas and Kauravas as the struggle for power and their empire. Krishna serves as the aide of the Pandava marksman, Arjuna. Mahabharatha is an integral part of the Indian culture. Through these characters, Mahabharata talks about human character and one should behave to be a better member of the society. Beside these classics, Amar Chitra Katha also tells the story of modern Indian history with stories based on characters like Chattrapati Shivaji, Akbar and Birbal etc. The show is a pioneer in its genre that attempts to bridge the gap between modern culture and ancient Hindu mythology. It's a learning and an enlightening experience while simultaneously fun to watch.
