Gus Green Van Sant Jr., best known as Gus Van Sant, is an American film director known best for his work on films that deal with themes of subcultures that are marginalized and discriminated against, particularly homosexuality. He has also done screenwriting and novel writing, aside from having directed music videos. He started his directorial career with the indie film Mala Noche, financing most of the movie himself with savings from a previous job. The film earned critical acclaim and led to a contract with Universal Movie Studios; however, due to creative disagreements, Van Sant continued working independently.

His next venture Drugstore Cowboy focused on drug users and the extremes they go to so as to get their fix. Once again, he was praised critically as a creative director. His next movie, titled My Own Private Idaho, was once again praised from all quarters and even won him an award. However, in an attempt to push the boundary, his next movie titled Even Cowgirls Get The Blues flopped hard. He returned to independent films with ‘Gerry’, which once again starred Matt Damon and Casey Affleck.

He then directed ‘Elephant’, a movie based on the Columbine High School massacre, but the movie was entirely fictitious in nature. Keeping with the fictitious reenactment of factual stories, he then made Last Days, which deals with the last few days of Kurt Cobain’s life. Van Sant, who is openly gay, then directed ‘Milk’, a biopic based on a gay politician named Harvey Milk. Starring Sean Penn, it received praise from critics and did well at the box office. His next film ‘ Restless Click to look into! >> Read More... ’, a comedy, didn’t fare well at all. It also received mixed reviews from critics.

His streak of bad movies continued with The Sea Of Trees, which was actually booed and heckled at by Cannes moviegoers.
