Charlayne got her start way back in 1978 when she starred in the role of Cindy in the TV movie Cindy. The film was a musical, and Charlayne had learned singing back in her childhood days which helped her not only bag the role but excel in it as well.

Her next film, released in 1982 was Hard Feelings, the story of a bullied white guy who hides in an area dominated by Black Americans where he meets Winona. Charlayne played the role of Winona and her performance was lauded so much that she was nominated for a Genie Award(one of the highest Canadian film awards) in her debut film itself. In 1989, Charlayne started appearing in the Golden Globe-nominated TV phenomenon Roseanne, later she went on to appear in films and TV series like Unbreakable, Hair, The Crucible. Sneaky Pete, Law and Order, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and many other amazing projects. She has also done many Broadway shows and theatre plays.
