He was born on September 19, 1975, to the current IGNOU's vice-chancellor Professor Muhammad Aslam and Nuzhat Aslam. Before making his directorial debut, he worked as a second assistant director and assistant director for films like Swades, Salaam Namaste, Being Cyrus, Fanaa, Ta Ra Rum Pum, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic. During the same time, he has also done some acting roles like Young Ranbir’s Teacher in Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, Ravina’s brother in Exitz and a minor role in Salaam Namaste. He never thought of becoming a director or an actor, he was preparing for medical entrance examinations, following his parent's suggestions, but was unable to clear entrances. He then went to take a second attempt and started preparation. In the mid-way, he realized that he didn’t want to do that. He then switched to English Honors, which was just a random selection. He then went to Jamia and did his Mass Communications.

Even while studying in Jamia he had no clue of what he wanted to do in life. His thought behind joining Jamia was that one can get time and exposure to sort things out and decide what to do. He then joined as DA for the film Let’s Enjoy without having any idea of what DA does. While working as an AD for lakshya and during this time, he figured out that he wanted to go for filmmaking and then shifted to Bombay from Delhi. He then spent as AD for the next eight years starting from the bottom and then released his own. During his initial stages as an AD in Bombay he faced many problems including financial, but he overcame all those odds and now emerged as a successful director.
