Shilpa Gulati is an Indian filmmaker and theatre artist known for National Award-winning documentaries Qissa-e-Parsi and Taala TeKunjee. Born and brought up in Delhi, Shilpa Gulati attended Lady Shri Ram College for Women in New Delhi for completing her Bachelor’s degree. She did her Master’s in media studies at Tata Institute of Social Studies, Mumbai, from 2008 to 2010. While her time in TISS, Shilpa Gulati interacted with some famous documentary filmmakers and explored many documentaries. Gradually, she got more inclined to become a filmmaker. Besides, Shilpa Gulati is a theatre artist with experience of over fifteen years. Since 2007, she has been a part of the Delhi-based theatre group Pandies, and she acts as a core member of the group.

She performed as a visiting researcher at Columbia University on a Fulbright Scholarship in the US. Shilpa Gulati enrolled in Jawaharlal Nehru University in 2016 to pursue her Ph.D. on structures of funding and exhibition for documentary films. She has been practicing as a faculty at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences since 2020. They worked together for the second time for the film ‘No Baby.’ In 2012, she directed the documentary ‘Dere tun Dilli’ along with Divya Cowasji. Dere tun Dilli is the story of the refugees from Dera Ismail Khan and Delhi.

Apart from direction, Shilpa Gulati also took care of the writing, editing, and cinematography departments. Shilpa Gulati released the documentary about the Parsi community called ‘Qissa-e-Parsi: The Parsi Story’ in 2014. The 30-minutes long documentary explores the diminishing Parsi community in our country. After a break of three years, Shilpa Gulati came back with the documentary film ‘Taala Te Kunjee’ or ‘Lock and Key’ in 2017, which is the story of five individuals recovery from alcohol addiction.

The film results from two and half year’s hard work of Shilpa Gulati and her team. She received her second consecutive National Award for TaalaTeKunjee in 2018.
