Hindi Musician Ustad Sabri Khan

Ustad Sabri Khan is a famous Sarangi player. He was born on 21 May 1927 in Moradabad. He belongs to Sainia Gharana. He received Sarangi playing lessons from his grandfather Ustad Haji Mohammad Khan and later continued his training with his father Ustad Chhajju Khan. He also learned some important and rare techniques of playing from his uncle Ustad Laddan Khan. At the beginning of his career, he played Sarangi with singers and musicians on All India Radio and also worked as a staff artist there. Apart from this, he visited many countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, Japan, the USSR, the United States, Canada, England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Mexico. He was the one who introduced Sarangi to the American and European people. He was invited as a visiting professor by the University of Washington, Seattle in 1981.

Recognizing his contribution to classical music, he was honored with many awards such as the Sahitya Kala Parishad Award, Shobhna Kala Sangam Award (1985), Begum Akhtar Award, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1986), Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Academy Award, Lucknow, UP (1990), Padma Shree Award by the President of India, Government of India (1992), Ustad Chand Khan Award (2002), Sangeet Bhushan Award (2002), Lifetime Achievement Award – LEGENDS OF INDIA – DMA – Delhi (2003), National Artist Award – All India Radio Prasar Bharti Award (2004), Padma Bhushan Award by the President of India, Government of India (2006), and Sangeet Natak Akademi Tagore Ratna Award (2012). Some of his famous songs names are Raga Jog, Raga Vachaspati, Raag Megh, Raga Multani, Raga Jog - Vilambit Ek Taal - Drut Teen Taal, Raga Gaud Sarang, Raga Vachaspati - Vilambit Ek Taal - Drut Teen Taal, Raga Pancham, Raga Marubihag, Misra Khamaj, Raga Saraswati, Sarangi: Raga Mishra Khammaj - Tala Dipachandi, Raga Darbari - Drut Gat - Teentaal, Raga Puria Kalyan, Sarangî. Râga Mishra Khammâj Tâla Dîpachandî, Tabla Teen Taal, Raga Shuddh Sarang - Drut Gat - Teentaal, Puria Kalyan, Raga Basant, Raag Pancham, Misra Peelu, Sham Kalyan, Sri, Raga Gaud Malhar, Pancham, Gorh Sarang, Thumri Mishra Kamaj, Tabla Solo Shikhar Tala, Raga Saugandh, Raga Nayiki Kanhara, Raag Adana, and Raga Patdeep. Ustad Sabri Khan died on 1 December 2015 in Delhi at age 88.
