She had been a world champion in the lightweight division and a national champion. Following her exceptional international success in 2009, she had received the renowned Arjuna Award. She also received the best boxer honor in the year 2010. Sarita Devi was born and brought up in a farming family in Khunou Thoubal, and she was the sixth child in a family of eight. At a very young age, Sarita began taekwondo training. When she first met 1998 Asian Games gold medalist Dingko Singh, her passion for being a boxer was awakened. When Sarita was 14 years old, her father passed away, making it difficult for her mother to care for the family. Despite this, Sarita persisted in her desire to fight.

Sarita Devi did her matriculation from Bal Baidya Mandir, Thoubal, to accommodate her boxing schedule, Sarita finished her further studies till the twelfth standard coursework in an open school. Sarita started her career by participating in a few of the exhibition games at the National Games in 1999. She eventually joined the Indian team and, in the year 2000, Sarita became a professional boxer. She competed for India in the Asian Boxing Championships in Bangkok in 2001 and earned a silver medal in the Lightweight division. The following years saw her competing and winning numerous titles. Sarita earned the gold medal in the Jamshedpur Senior National in 2005.

At the third Asian Boxing championship held in Taiwan, she won the second gold medal of her professional career. She took home the gold medal at the fourth World Women's Boxing Championship, held in Delhi the year after. As an accomplishment, when Sarita faced off against Bedo of Hungary in the 2010 AIBA Boxing Championship, she made history by being the first Indian woman to compete professionally. Sarita was also recruited as a sub-inspector in the Manipur Police Department in 2005 and was promoted to DSP in 2010.
