The music director of the film is John Mellencamp, and the editor is John F. Lyons. Cinematographer of the film is Andrew Dum.

Plot

The story revolves in the year 1942, around a young guy Homer Macaulay, who is fourteen years old and lives with his widow mother Katie, his sister Bess who is older than her and his younger brother Ullysses, who is four years old. He works as a telegram messenger to support his family. The only aim of his life is to be the best and fastest telegraph messenger in his town, Ithaca.

Homer delivers the very first telegram to a Hispanic woman, who does not know how to read English. She asks him to read it for her. The telegram was from the Secretary of Defence, informing about her son’s death in the war.

Many young men of the town had left their houses and families to serve in the World War II World War II is a Malayalam information TV show on >> Read More... . Marcus, Homer’s older brother is also one of them. Their father also went to serve in the War, and has died recently.

Marcus, letters told them about life of soldiers in the War. Marcus always reminded his brother Homer, about his responsibility to take care of the family in his absence. As, now he is the man of the house.

Homer always had to keep the telegrapher Willi Grogan awake. He used to wake him with a cup of strong coffee and cold water. Homer loses his innocence at a very young age. Every time when he delivered telegrams, he wishes that one of them announces return of his brother Marcus.

Homer is always jealous of Ullysses, when he sees him so fearless and oblivious to the war.

One day he discusses this with his mother Katie, who is always lost and only ‘sees’ her husband, that how he is jealous of Ullysses fearlessness. That night Homer reads a letter from Marcus to Mr. Grogan and says, he will shut out the world if his brother dies in the war.

The next day, when Homer goes to Mr. Grogan for telegraphs he finds him dead. He died after typing a last telegraph message, it was the one Homer was scared of since his brother left. Homer with Toby, Marcus fellow soldier reaches his house to give the news of his brother, Marcus’ demise in war.

Star performance

Neustaedter, as Homer, the main lead of the movie, tries his best to perform his character well. And gives a satisfactory performance.

Hamish Linklater, as Tom, fails to impress. His character Tom is defined very poorly.

Meg Ryan as Homer’s mother plays a small role. Like her directorial performance her acting performance is also very disappointing. Meg Ryan who is a wonderful actor, disappoints with her acting performance. Her acting in this film could not match her natural charm that made her a star.

Sam Shephard who is a great actor plays a weak character like Willi ( Homer’s boss.

All the actors looked listless, stiff and confused as if they are doing early Rehearsals.

Analysis

The film ‘Ithaca' is based on the novel ‘Human Comedy’ by William Saroyan’s. The story revolves around young Homer, who is just 14 years old and the events that made him mature even before his age.

The director of the film is Meg Ryan. Ithaca is her directorial debut, and her work as a director is not satisfactory.

The film is very confusing, the concept of the film is very poorly executed and it lacks in forward momentum. Many scenes in the film are dragged unnecessarily. The actors seem lost.

The costumes and the visuals does not match with what they were actually in the era of 1940’s.

The characters of the movie are written very poorly. The actors looked lost in the film as if they are trying to figure out what character they are supposed to be.

What’s there?

  • Nothing as such major.

What’s not there?

  • Poor dialogue delivery by Actors.
  • Poor direction.
  • Disappointing acting performances by the actors.

Verdict

If you want to pass your time you can watch this film.
