Plot

Gian Singh, who is an ex-army officer and is suffering from PTSD because of the death of his friend and senior colleague, wants to live a simple life in his village away from all the turmoil and unrest caused by the Partition of India and Pakistan. One day, he finds a Muslim woman, Naseem, who was evading India but got separated from her family. Over time, both fell in love with each other. How did they tackle the stereotyped society of that time? How will Naseem get back to her family? How will Naseem convince her family of her relationship with Gian? As the story progresses, all these questions are answered.

Star Performances

Jimi as Gian is an excellent choice. He performed his part very convincingly and made us, as an audience, connect with his story. Kristine tried but was unable to leave a lasting impact as Naseem. Hollywood’s favorite choice, Irrfan, justified his role and proved his high demand. Neve and John did well in their parts. The rest of the cast has done a decent job.

Analysis

Vic Sarin did an excellent job as the director of the film. The cinematography, especially the wide-angle shots, and the lush and vibrant landscapes in the background, is the highlight of the film. The screenplay is poorly written. The story of the film moves quite slowly and it doesn’t justify its title. Editing was sloppy; there were sudden, unjustified cuts that broke the flow of the story and poor use of VFX (Visual effects). Some characters, like John’s Walter Hankins, feel unwanted as the story proceeds. Characters like Avtar and Margaret were underutilized. There aren’t many scenes representing the consequences of the Partition which diverts the story of the film from its central theme. The BGM was decent. The first half was good, but the story felt exceptionally paced in the second half. The second half felt poorly written and more like a remake of Gadar’s story (a 2001 precedent movie based on the same topic) than an original concept. We can conclude it is a boring one. The emotion-heavy climax of the film is one of the positive aspects of the film.

What’s There?

•         Great depiction of Indian culture and religious differences

•         Decent performances

•         Eye-pleasing cinematography

•         Specific shots depicting the aftermath of the Partition, 1947

•         Emotion-heavy love story

What’s Not There?

•         Poor writing and scripting

•         Lack of objective

•         Diversion from the central theme

•         Lack of an original concept (it was inspired by ‘Gadar’)

•         Characters felt at the mercy of the plot

Verdict

Partition lacks an excellent and original story and couldn’t do justice with the title. The second half of the film lacks originality. Except for the protagonist, one couldn’t connect to the characters. However, if you want to watch an everyday romantic drama with an emotion-heavy climax and great camera prowess, you can try it.
