Plot

Malik Henry decides to celebrate his average grades with his collegemates. They assemble at Sara Palski’s lake house. However, their plans for a fun weekend come to an abrupt halt when Malik is severely injured by a shark attack! Worse, the group of eight realizes that it is not one, but multiple species of man-eaters after them! Will they be able to survive?

Star Performances

If there is anything good about this movie, it is only the performances of Sara Paxton and Chris Carmack.

Analysis

Imagine ‘Jaws’ being mixed into the grinder with ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.’ The mish-mash is the plot line of ‘Shark Night.’ What starts as a horror thriller, ends up to be an unintentionally grotesque dark comedy. Probably they took inspiration from the wrong installment of ‘Jaws’!

We are not making this up. Despite the potential, the writers made a meal of the script. They thought that a bunch of teens, with a couple of sleazy antagonists and deadly sharks would pull the audience in. However, by the end of this film, you wonder whether had to feel scared or laugh at the sheer absurdity of the plot. That is not something director David R. Ellis can feel proud about. However, a simple look at his filmography will make you wonder if he ever tried anything different.

If this was not enough, the plot twists are so generic, that even a toddler would guess that with closed eyes. One of the plot twists, involving the motives of the antagonists is so lame, some viewers would be scratching their heads in utter confusion. Even the special effects in this film were anything but impressive.

As for the acting performances, there is nothing worth remembering from this movie. Sara Paxton as one of the protagonists did try, but her efforts were not enough to salvage the absurdity of the storyline. Even the efforts of Chris Carmack as one of the antagonists Dennis Crim is washed away by the ludicrous plot.

What's There?

  • Only the performances of Sara Paxton and Chris Carmack

What's Not There?

  • Ludicrous storyline
  • Bad special effects
  • Sloppy editing
  • An ensemble cast that appeared clueless
  • Sequences that ended up being unintentionally funny

Verdict

‘Shark Night’ is a movie that was aimed at attracting teenagers in droves. However, a wafer-thin plot and clunky editing ensure that the movie will attract only a couple of flies to the movie hall. This movie is best left forgotten!
