Analysis

The Old Man and The Gun is a simple, character driven drama about crime that is slow paced and on the profound side rather than a flashy action heist flick. It explores the life and character development of criminal Forrest Tucker through its expressive and well-done storytelling. There’s no significant message, it's simply a story. Robert Redford is brilliant in his depiction of a time-tested criminal, and the chemistry between him and Sissy Spacek in particular must be applauded. The smooth jazz that makes up the musical score of the film lends an air of refinement and elegance to the atmosphere. This movie is a subtle, profound drama that is more about the development of its characters than it is about crime in general.

What’s There?

  • Heartfelt and profound
  • Soulful musical score
  • Incredible cast performances

What’s Not There?

  • Slow-paced and less in tune with other movies belonging to the crime genre

Verdict

If you’re looking for a character driven drama with a profound story and a soulful atmosphere, The Old Man and The Gun is your pick.
