He has entered the entertainment world, theatre to be specific, at the young age of 23. In 2004, he has started his own theatre group, by the name, “Aranya”. He was born on 19th December 1976 and is a Sagittarius with a mild influence of Capricorn according to his star sign. He was born in an affluent family in the municipality of Baramulla district, which is in the northern part of the Indian state Jammu and Kashmir, but from there he has moved to live in Madhya Pradesh’s Hoshangabad Town. He is reportedly influenced by the magically realistic Hindi writer Vinod Kumar Shukla, the literary movement Nayi Kahani’s stalwart Nirmal Verma, and the German-American poet of Los Angeles, Henry Charles Bukowski. In his seventh play by the name “Red Sparrow” he has paid glowing tributes to all of them. He has written, played, directed and staged many plays. “Shakkar Ke Paanch Daane” of 2004 is about an Indian who is just a common man in a small town. The Drama had the character played by Kumud Mishra who went on to become Kaul’s good friend and associate. Though the play was originally in Hindi, its success made him play it in English with a translation by Arshia Sattar in 2012. Best Script of 2006 by Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards was give to his “Peele Scooter Wala Aadmi”, the play that centered on the relationship between a father and his son. In the same year, Kaul has made a Play based on the lives at homes for the aged people. Incidentally, he wrote the play after a visit to one of such homes and wanted to express his opinion to his audience that people at those homes too have fun. In 2009, when the philosophical dispute posed (as “Huis Clos”, the French play by Jean-Paul Sartre that was adapted and made in Hindi) as “Antaheen” by Ranga Shankara, Kaul went on to direct it with aplomb. His other famous plays are, “Park” - in which three men quarrel on the best bench to sit at a park, and “Ilhaam” (meaning, ‘The Enlightenment’). “Jajantaram Mamantaram” of 2003 in which he plays the character ‘Jeran’ is his first movie as an actor, and then came “Saat Chya Aat Gharaat” the 2004 Marathi movie in which he was supposed to have shown his face somewhere. Bela Negi’s “Daayen Ya Baayen”, the 2010 Hindi movie had him in the character of ‘Sundar’, and as ‘Flight Lt. Ram’ in “1971” - the Amrit Sagar directed 2007, National Award winning, Hindi movie that was based on a true story of Indian POWs of Indo-Pak war of 1971. He has made a special appearance as ‘Manav’, in the 2011 “I Am Afia Megha Abhimanyu Omar” (shown at the Film Festival one year earlier), the film that had four short films, all interwoven into one. In 2013, he was the cunning ‘Bittoo Mama’ in the film adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s novel, “Kai Po Che!”. The next year saw him in “CityLights” as ‘Vishnu Sir’, under Hansal Mehta direction, which was actually the remake of the UK movie of 2013, “Metro Manila”. Manav Kaul has the 2012 film, “Hansa” to his credit as its director and Screenplay Writer. Other than BBC citing it as one to watch, the film has won the Best Film Critics and also the Best Film Audience Vote awards at an international film festival called, “OSIAN CINEFAN”.
