Plot

Meesha Gaikwad, a paraplegic and the estranged heir to the Gaikwad family of Morbi is called at once to her ancestral palace. She has not met her father in years, and now she finds him missing when she needs him the most.

The disappearance of Meesha's father Ratan Singh Gaikwad is not the only thing odd about the Gaikwad palace. She has visions of her father and witnesses some unusual incidents in the palace. Yet nobody believes her. Can Meesha get to the bottom of this?

Star Performances

Sara Ali Khan is decent in her role. Given her previous ventures, she has done a fine job as Meesha Singh Gaikwad.

Vikrant Massey is decent in his portrayal of Kapil, the estate manager. Chitrangada Singh deserves a special mention for her complex portrayal of Rukmini, the muse of Ratan Singh and Meesha's stepmother. Even Rahul Dev is fine as the local SP.

Analysis

'Gaslight' is a confusing film in terms of vision and the color grading of the movie. The film starts on a decent note but gets entangled in its complicated twists.

Somebody should tell the makers of this movie that a dark ambiance will not increase the curiosity amongst the viewers. Even if the brightness mode of your movie player is increased to the maximum, some scenes almost look like silhouettes.

Unlike a good mystery thriller, 'Gaslight' is almost boring to a certain extent. By the time you crack the code, you might be thinking, 'Did I sign up for this?' Some of the twists in this film are so generic that even a toddler would guess what will come next. This is not how you make a mystery thriller.

Is the movie that bad? Not exactly, for there are some acting performances that somehow salvage the film. Vikrant Massey, known for his knack for attempting something new, surprises us with his shades of grey. For all the criticism meted out to her, Sara Ali Khan did attempt something different, though the storyline did not do enough to back up her efforts. Even Chitrangada Singh and Rahul Dev's efforts went in vain, thanks to the film's dynamics.

What's There?

  • Earnest efforts from Vikrant Massey, Chitrangada Singh, and Rahul Dev
  • Good background score

What's Not There?

  • Too dark ambience
  • Twists that just do not make sense
  • Sloppy editing
  • A narrative that is borderline boring

Verdict

'Gaslight' is a unique experiment marred by improper editing and sloppy camerawork. Even the acting performances could not make up for the mess made by the makers and the writers. If you want something to test your brain and your patience, you can go for this film!
