Plot

Lovely is a bright student, who has just one problem in her life: her skin! Due to her complexion, many boys have rejected her. As her father arranges for a wedding with double the dowry, the house is robbed of the goods arranged for the same. However, when the investigating officer starts falling for her, Lovely is confused. Who will she accept in the end?

Star Performances

The film’s plot might be predictable, but the treatment isn’t. Balwinder Singh Janjua has worked well on the comic elements, which for once, make the viewers laugh.

Randeep Hooda and Ileana D’ Cruz have played their parts superbly. The supporting cast did a better job, with Pavan Malhotra, Geetika Vidya Ohlyaan, Geeta Agarwal Sharma, and Karan Kundrra surprising one and all with their brilliant performances.

Analysis

The obsession with fair skin, especially in India is something that none have been able to understand. Due to this very obsession, several Indians have to face discrimination of various kinds, including rejection for marriage.

Balwinder Singh Janjua [who also created the web series ‘ CAT CAT is an Indian-punjabi language crime thriller w >> Read More... ’] has come out with ‘Tera Kya Hoga Lovely’, based on one such incident. The story is set in urban Haryana, which has been one of the most volatile states, both culturally and economically. So how does the movie work?

The film focuses on Lovely, played by Ileana D’ Cruz, who is the ‘Sarvgun Sampann’ girl in every sense of the word. However, her dark complexion makes her an instant red card for the prospective grooms. Her unlikely encounter with a trigger-happy cop, played by Randeep Hooda, only complicates the matter.

The movie does not have anything new to offer in terms of content. However, when it comes to the emotional elements, the film is surprisingly good. After months, maybe even years, do we see a film that hits most of the right notes, if not all, in comedy. Most of moviegoers are yearning for that comic movie that makes people laugh, and ‘Tera Kya Hoga Lovely’ might just be that film. Interestingly, it is the supporting actors who outshine the main actors here.

The movie is not completely flawless though. The narrative is quite slow for the initial first half, and despite the comic elements, the narrative is not as crisp and nuanced as intended. Verdict

‘Tera Kya Hoga Lovely’ is one of those rare clean comedies that deserve a watch. The plot is not out of the blue, but the treatment of the narrative is. A more nuanced message from the makers and a crisper cut would have made this film nearly flawless. Still, you can watch this if you love such wacky comedies.
