The Kerala floods were an immense tragedy in the state, causing a lot of loss and trauma. This movie tells the story of this “rising” tension and the people who went through it. It shows the wrath of Mother Nature and the strength of the human spirit fighting against it.

Plot

The story takes place in a small city called Aruvikkulam, located in Kerala. In 2018, the town was devastated by extreme floods. This movie takes into account the people of this small city, from a news reporter, to a model, to a fisherman, and combines all their various experiences into one story.

It is primarily a movie made to draw attention to the tragedy that shook Kerala. It is a story of the will of the people of Aruvikkulam. It speaks volumes about what humankind can achieve in the face of adversity. It shows the lifestyles and experiences of people from different backgrounds, how the floods affected them all the same, and how they overcame it.

The essence of the movie comes down to the power of human will, in a fight against Nature. The people not only fight to reclaim their own lives but also help others, showing the best version of what a person can be.

It seems that all the big names in the Malayalam film industry have come together to create this masterpiece and to showcase how far Malayalam cinema has come.

All members of the ensemble cast have delivered up to expectations. However, Tovino Thomas, Asif Ali, and Kunchako Boban deserve special mentions.

Tovino Thomas has played the role of a former military officer. His character is like the hero. He is brave, courageous, selfless, and always willing to help people. He has acted well, adding more depth to both the character and the film.

Kunchako Boban, who plays a government official named Shaji, and Asif Ali, who plays a model named Nixon, have also done noteworthy work. They deserve a special mention for the way they have handled their characters.

Analysis

This film shows two things. On one hand, it shows panic and desperation that the people of Kerala felt. But at the same time, it also reveals the incredible strength of human will and what it can achieve.

In terms of cinematography, Jude Anthany Thomas and Akhil George have ensured meticulous detail. They perfectly capture the extent of the tragedy caused by the Kerala floods. They don’t try to mild down the visuals or shy away from being realistic; the suffering of Kerala is depicted in a genuine manner. The visuals used in the film, of the sea, the streets, etc, have a very moving impact on the audience.

A big plus point is that it does not precisely aim to get sympathy from the viewers of the film; it seeks to inspire. How the story is portrayed represents the aspect of “overcoming” first and “suffering” second, making the narrative all the more impactful. 2018 tries to be a credible account of the Kerala floods, aiming to educate the public on what is happening in different parts of the country from the lens of several different kinds of people who lived through it, making it relatable to the audience.

There are times when, to cover its several simultaneously running plotlines, it begins to feel like the film is a bit all over the place and messy. The director has tried to make it a well-rounded film, but the runtime is short. Hence, the film gets overwhelming at some points. Perhaps a longer runtime could have made it seem like a more complete film.

The soundtrack of the film was composed by Nobin Paul At 32, Nobin Paul is one of the most renowned and >> Read More... . He has done an excellent job in terms of matching the tone of the movie.

What’s There?

  • The plot is very touching and educative.
  • The visuals are stunning.

What’s Not There?

  • Overstretched and all over the place.

Verdict

The film 2018 has done an incredible job bringing the reality and the horrors of the Kerala floods to the limelight. It finds the perfect balance between being realistic and inspiring all at once. It has several touching as well as informative elements. It is definitely not a film to miss out on.
