2. Mammootty

Muhammed Kutty Ismail Paniparambil is the original name of Mammootty, the Malayalam superstar. Having working in more than 300 movies he is still a star to reckon with, in Malayalam film industry. Apart from acting, he was also a lawyer. Currently he is busy with philanthropic works too.

Born on 7th September 1951, Mammootty also donned the role of a producer. He has worked in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada, other than Malayalam films. He garnered the National Award for his acting skills, thrice in his career. He shares this feat with veteran actor Kamal Haasan. 5 Kerala State Film Awards and a dozen Filmfare Awards also decorate his cupboard. Mammootty was bestowed with Padmashri during 1998. He is fondly called as Mammukka or Megastar by Malayalam fans.

Hailing from Kottayam, Kerala, Mammootty, after studying in Maharajah College, he pursued law at the Ernakulam Government Law College. Mammootty entered the film industry through the insignificant role in the film Anubhavangal Paalichakal in 1971. The flick Devalokam was the first flick in which he played the lead role. Sphodanam and Trishna made Mammootty a star to reckon with in Malayalam cinema.

Mammootty was very much lauded for his performance in the flick New Delhi. Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha is the another film which provided the perfect fodder to his acting skills. Some of the other notable films of Mammukka include August 15, Pranchiyettan & The Saint, Drona 2010, Kutty Shrank, Nazrani, Pazhassi Raja, Ee Pattanathil Bhootham, Yugapurushan, Maunam Sammatham, Thalapathy, Swathi Kiranam, Balram vs Tharadas and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. Mammootty’s penchant towards acting made him to take both commercial and offbeat roles with equal panache. Mammootty’s son Dulquer Salman is a rising star in Malayalam film industry now.

In his career, Mammootty acted with several actors and actresses. Mammootty also involved himself in the production of some serials in television. Mammootty is credited with the responsibility of Akshaya project’s goodwill ambassador. He also supports various other social causes, including a project pertaining to health.

3. Kamal

Kamaluddin Mohammed Majeed, more prominently known as Kamal, is a movie director, producer, and writer. Kamal has predominantly worked in Malayalam cinema. He was born in Mathilakam, Kodungallur in Thrissur, Kerela on 28 November 1957. He had started his career after completing his graduation from Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur and Christ College, Irinjalakuda. He got married to Saburabi and had two children with her, Hanna Mohamed and Jenuse Mohamed. His son, Jenuse also made his debut in the year 2015 with the film 100 Days of Love. It was also a Malayalam film. His career in the industry started when he scripted for the film Thraasa.

4. Joy Mathew

Joy Mathew has various feathers to his cap; he is an actor, director, writer and a political persona. But he is very humble in this real life. Hailing from an upper-class Christian family he had his initial days in Kozhikode. He initially joined Pune Film Institute but later opted for post graduation in Mass Media and Journalism. But films always remained his passion. 

 

Born on 20th September 1961, Joy Mathew hails from Challissery, Thrissur. Joy Mathew’s films reflect his childhood days and fervent association with left-wing politics. He believes in giving equal treatment to everyone. Joy Mathew is an optimist and is service-minded. He has great passion towards theatre and films. Joy Mathew’s input to Malayalam theatre is indeed commendable. He has appeared in some movies too. Joy rocked the Malayalam film industry during the 80s. 

 

Joy Mathew has donned the role of a main villain in the biggest 2013 grosser-Amen. The flick Shutter is his debut directorial venture and it received great critical acclaim. This film gained international recognition and was bestowed with several honours. This movie was also well received by the audience. 

 

The 1986 flick Ammaye Kanan, in which John Abraham wielded the megaphone, had Joy donning the lead role. This film was lauded critically and it was adjudged as one of the best Indian films by British Film Institute. Then Joy was in a sabbatical for 27 years and re-entered the industry in 2013 and he donned the role of supporting actor as well as director. He has a distinction of working in 14 movies in 2013 and this indeed a commendable achievement. 

 

Sangeeta Nataka Academy and Kerala Sahitya Academy felicitated him for a couple of his plays. Athirthikkal, Pretoria-October 18, Sankadal and Chille 73 are some of his commendable endeavors as a playwright. Joy Mathew took vigorous involvement in some cultural groups. The Campus Theatre Movement is his foundation which was started in 1980. His contribution to Malayalam plays is over 20.
