Plot

Leela is an aspiring actress rising from a southern Tamil Nadu village. She has been a struggling actress in Chennai, waiting for her big break along with her three friends, who were also aspiring actresses. But, for her family, Leela is a corporate employee in the city. On the other hand, Arivu (Romeo of this film) is a 35-year-old numbskull, who hasn’t fallen in love as he was busy making a living in Malaysia. While he has collected wealth, he has lost his youth. Always dressed in a formal outfit, he is a living parody of a 35-year-old virgin. He now longs for love and meets Leela. When Leela’s big secret is revealed at home, she is forced to marry Arivu. Hence, Arivu’s journey to impress Leela commences.

Star Performances

Vijay Antony’s self-referential jokes and amiable demeanor made the film enjoyable. With a charming smile highlighted by his spectacles and properly tucked half-sleeved bright checked shirts, Vijay pulls off the character of Arivu beautifully. Leela, on the other hand, is constantly annoyed and dismissive of her husband’s approaches, which leaves a bit of scope for the actor portraying her to explore new dimensions. With a little work to do with the character of Leela, Mirnalini does her best to perform the role. VTV Ganesh and Yogi Babu don’t have much to do, but they help the story progress.  The most important part of a romcom for the audience to root for lead characters is the chemistry between the leading pair. Unfortunately, both actors fail to register as standalone characters or as a unit. Though they are meant to be awkward around one another, their lack of chemistry makes it very hard for us to root for them to be together, especially during the final portions. The rest of the cast put forth their best with their limited time.

Analysis

“Romeo” is based on the concept of forced arranged marriage. The screenplay tries to offer something unique and different from past movies which are based on similar concepts. Despite all the efforts, the film still resembles the 2008 romcom “ Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi Click to look into! >> Read More... ”. The director adds an interesting element in almost every scene to excite a viewer, but this only lasts till the interval point. The movie’s flow drops drastically after the interval; it doesn’t show anything significant but the expected husband-wife quarrels that one has already experienced in the film “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi”. However, the last 30 minutes of this film are compactly written and provide a decent closure. The film pays off well to the central plots which are set up by the storyline. The sister’s flashback successfully evokes the emotional appeal; however, it could have been better placed earlier in the second half than compressed it with the end. Meticulous dialogue writing is what enhances the quality of the film. Although, a little more effort in framing the sequences can make it even more appealing to the audience.  Always a delight to watch Vijay Antony underplaying on-screen, the director gets it in the perfect meter, actor has given what is required for the situations by understanding them clearly. Mrinalini Ravi’s best characterization and performance to date, she has equal importance as the hero. Supporting artists have their share of meaty roles; VTV Ganesh and Yogi Babu are used to drive the story more than comedy just for the sake of it. Except for the dance number used weirdly, the overall songs in the movie are aptly utilized. A good background score enhances the flow of the film’s story. The neat cinematography captures what is required and nothing less. The editing was fine, but at times one feels the pacing issues. VFX used for fire could have been more realistic.

What’s There?

  • There are some well-conceived plots in the film.
  • Some witty jokes make viewers giggle.
  • The cinematography is praise-worthy.

What’s Not There?

  • This film feels very much like the Bollywood’s classic romcom “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi”.
  • Unnecessary use of item songs disrupts the flow.
  • There were too many plots which may be confusing for the audience to decipher.

Verdict

"Romeo" offers a romantic story with engaging performances and an intriguing storyline, making it a must-watch. Though, its striking similarities with the classic romance comedy “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” make it a bore. There are times when one starts counting the minutes remaining for this film to end. It began on a high note but then dropped down and hardly pulled back until the climax. I prefer watching “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” over this film because of the better storyline and execution.
