Plot

In 1977, Jack Delroy is the host of a late night talk show ‘Night Owls with Jack Delroy’. In order to boost his ratings and become the number one show, he decides to invite a girl Lilly, who is allegedly possessed by a demon on the occasion of Halloween. But what happens when the joke turns real?

Star Performances

Colin Cairnes and Cameron Cairnes deserve a pat on their backs for this unique concept.

They not only managed to bring something out of the blue, but also make it engaging and captivating. The ensemble cast has done a superb job in terms of the acting performances.

Analysis

Many people grumble over the fact that horror movies are not as gripping and chilling as they used to be a couple of years ago. However, ‘Late Night with the Devil’ is a welcome exception.

Contrary to the found footage template, the movie is made in a documentary style. There is no promise for constant chills. However, the way the suspense is built, and the way events unfold, the audience would be intrigued by the twists and turns the story takes.

Some say this film is inspired by true events. Whether or not this is true is another matter, but the way ‘Late Night with the Devil’ proceeds is certainly astonishing. The runtime is not more than 1 hour 33 minutes, so everything passes off smoothly like a hot knife through butter.

The only minor problem with this movie is the climax. While it was not bizarre, a better job could have been done at that. Yet, the acting performances by most of the ensemble cast more than make up for it. David Dastmalchian and Ingrid Torelli are the best performers from the entire lot.

What’s There

  • Efficient camerawork
  • Innovative format for a horror movie
  • A surprisingly good narrative set up by Colin Cairnes and Cameron Cairnes
  • Good direction
  • Brilliant acting from the ensemble cast, particularly David and Ingrid

What’s Not There

  • Minor issue with the pace
  • Underwhelming climax

Verdict

‘Late Night with the Devil is not your perfect horror thriller. However, the unique concept, powered by brilliant performances makes it a welcome change. Colin Cairnes and Cameron Cairnes have done something that very few filmmakers would attempt to: make a fresh product that will last for a long time! You should give this movie a try for sure!
