Abul Hayat was born to a Muslim household on September 7, 1944, in Murshidabad, India, which is today known as West Bengal. He is an actor from Bangladesh. He also works as a filmmaker, civil engineer, and screenwriter. Hayat graduated from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering (BUET). In 1981, he returned to Bangladesh and quit his government post to work in the private sector. He won the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for the movie Daruchini Dwip in 2007, and the Bangladeshi government honored him with the Ekushey Padak for acting in 2015. In the Onno Bhuboner Cheleta television film, he played the role of Misir Ali.
