He was born on 29 January 1931 in northwest London's suburb Pinner, Middlesex. He finished his schooling at the University College School in London and later went to college to complete further educational qualifications. Afterward, he attended the Gonville and Caius College of Cambridge. After that, he entered the film industry and dedicated himself to his career and began his journey in the world of movies and web series. He wrote a musical named Stop the World – I Want to Get Off (1961) in association with Anthony Newley, and it became a film after some years. In addition, he also wrote some other musicals in collaboration with Anthony, for example, The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd (1965), and Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971).
