English Director Of Photography Wolfgang Held

Wolfgang Held, a German by birth, is pursuing his career as the Director of Photography right from the mid-1990s in New York City. He has completed his studies in American Literature from the Free University, Berlin, Germany in 1988 and later did M.F.A degree in Film from the Temple University in 1992. The languages specialized are German and French.

Mr. Held started his journey with camera in 1996 with his first narrative, Ripe, a 35mm feature film, starring Monica Keena, Daisy Eagon and directed by Mo Ogrodnik. Stephen Holden, critic at the New York Times, had even singled this out.

He was honored with the Best Cinematographer title at the Film Festival conducted at New England. Wolfgang Held has also photographed other feature film narratives such as The Tic Code under Gary Winick’s direction in 2000 which portrays about Jazz musicians and Maze, a complicated love tale in which the lead falls in love with his best buddy’s girlfriend.

Wolfgang has also done various dramatic feature films as well as great documentaries like the Broken Meat directed by Pola Rapaport in 1990 which won him the Best Cinematography award at Oberhausen Film Fest in 1991. His other feature film Disappearances starring Kris Kristofferson and directed one by Jay Craven got him the Best Cinematographer award at Indianapolis International Film Fest in 2007. His achievements don’t end here. His name was one among those short-listed names for the Oscar in 2001 for his recent theatrical release The Lottery, the academy award nominee. He has also been nominated for the Best Documentary Feature award for his feature film ‘Children Underground.’ ‘Teeth’ which was a black comedy horror play that was directed by Mitchell Lichtenstein also turned out to be a great hit. 

Mr. Held also had some commercial clients which include Wounded Warrior Project, Jello TV commercial as well as Campbell Soup Commercial Campaigns. He is associated withPola Rapaport, a filmmaker, together with whom he co-produces films which include Broken Meat filmed in 1992; it was awarded the Best Cinematography at the Oberhausen festival.
Lately Held has been putting more emphasis on projects which are social as well as nonfictional.
