Irvin Kershner

Irvin Kershner was an acclaimed American movie director and infrequent actor. He took birth on 29, April 1923. He was born in Philadelphia. He spent his childhood in an artistic and cultural background, and that helped him to understand music and art. 

Music formed an important part of Kershner’s early life. He also imbibed lessons from Temple University’s Tyler School of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Later he got trained from the popular painting master Hans Hofmann. He also dipped his hands at photography which he learned from the Art Centre College of Design, Los Angeles. 

Giving lessons on photography and imbibing cinema-related courses was the initial step of Kershner in his film career graph. Later Kershner and Paul Coates, his companion, commenced a Documentary Television Series, where Kershner wore multiple hats including penning story, directing, handling the camera, and editing.

Eventually, Kershner shifted focus to feature films. The 1980 flick The Empire Strikes Back is a landmark in his career. Later he wielded the megaphone for the sequel of the 1977 iht movie “ Star Wars Star Wars is a show of Mastiii, India’s most popul >> Read More... ”. Picking Kershner for the director’s role was quite unexpected at that time. Producer George Lucas chose Kershner out of all the top notch directors because he felt that the latter is well-versed in the nuances of Hollywood film direction. 

Kershner worked as the Adviser of Martha Neil Smith, who is the Founding Director of the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities.  He was active in this position till the end of his life. 

Kershner passed away on November 27, 2010 in Los Angeles after suffering from lung cancer. Kershner had been concentrating on photography in his fag end of his life. 

Kershner won many Awards in his lifetime including The Lifetime Career Award from the Saturn Awards  and was also nominated for several awards.
