Megan Elizabeth Laura Diana Follows was born in Toronto, Ontario on March 14, 1968. She is a bilingual actress from Canada and the United States. In 1985, she gained fame by playing the character of Anne Shirley in the 1985 Canadian television series Anne of Green Gables, and its two sequels. Megan is the youngest of four children in a family of actors. Ted Follows, a Canadian theatrical actor and director, was her father, and Dawn Greenhalgh, a Canadian actress, was her mother. Her parents eventually divorced. Her three siblings are also work in the entertainment business. Edwina is her older sister, and she is a writer. Laurence and Samantha Follows are her brothers and they are also actors.

Her first acting gig happened when she was nine years old when she appeared in a Bell Canada advertisement. Follows made her debut as Anne Shirley in the 1985 miniseries "Anne of Green Gables." The miniseries, which was entirely produced in Canada, became a worldwide hit and is one of the most highly-rated dramas in Canadian television history. Her performances in the first two miniseries garnered her two Gemini awards for best actress. In 2020, it was reported that Follows will make her directorial debut with the psychological thriller film Maternal. She has starred in several feature films. Follows married Canadian photographer Christopher David Porter, whom she met on the production of Deep Sleep, in 1991. Lyla Anne Porter and Russell Porter are their two children. In 1996, the couple divorced. Follows has worked as a spokesperson for the Canadian aid group, World Vision. She worked as a spokesperson and photographer in Rwanda and Tanzania.
