It all started when he was thirteen years old and went to watch a movie, Dog Day Afternoon, with his cousins.

David adored the acting part and decided to be on TV one day. David’s father worked as a sanitation worker, and this idea of acting didn’t go well with him. Hence, David went to join the US Air Force when he turned nineteen. He served as a police officer at the New York Police Department for almost fifteen years. This job of police helped him portray the characters of officers on TV.

David also joined an acting school while working in the police department. After that, he started performing in plays and landed minor roles in films and series at first. David’s first breakthrough was when he got the role of McGinty in the series, Law and Order. After that, he did cameos in the TV shows including Feds, New York Undercover, Trinity, Third Watch, and NYPD Blue.

David’s first prominent role came with the show, The Beat, where he played Rei Morales. David also appeared in numerous films including Scar City, Rounders, O.K. Garage, Bringing Out the Dead and much more. He mostly portrayed the character of cops. David reached the pinnacle of fame with the shows like Oz and Dexter. David essayed the character of Enrique Morales in Oz, and it narrated the story of the criminals living in a prison.

Dexter was a fantasy crime show which focused on the forensic expert, Dexter Morgan and David played the part of Sgt. Angel Batista in the show. He won the Satellite Award under the category of Best Supporting Actor for the series, Dexter. David also worked in television movies like Wit, Undefeated, and Angel. Currently, David is seen essaying the character of Sal Maroni on the famous TV show, Gotham, based on the life of Bruce Wayne and James Gordon.

David had made brief appearances on series like Person of Interest, Elementary, CSI: Miami, Deception, and various others. David tied the knots with Liza Colón-Zayas, who is also an actress. They are the proud parents of David Zayas Jr.
