Hart Bochner

Hart Bochner, born as Hart Matthew Bochner, is a Canadian actor-turned-film director and screenwriter. He was born in Toronto, in the house of noted actor, Lloyd Bochner, and Ruth, a concert pianist. Isaiah L. Kenen is his great uncle. His family is Jewish, with Russian and Ukrainian ancestry. Bochner got enrolled into the University of California in San Diego. Hart got a taste of acting by doing an advertisement for Kool-Aid. He wanted to learn formally, so, over a weekend, he went to an open house at the American Film Institute, where he got acquainted with a woman, who turned out to be the wife of the director, Franklin Schaffner.

In 1975, Bochner made his film debut in Franklin Schaffner's Islands of Stream, as George C Scott's oldest son. Then, in 1979, he was roped into playing an antagonistic role in Breaking Away. The film became a sleeper hit and also got an Academy Award nomination. His soulful brown eyes, thick black hair, and chiseled good looks made him a great fit for charming roles.

Bochner made his TV-movie debut in 1980 with Haywire, in which he played the character of Bill Hayward. He got starred as Doc, the antagonist, in the 1980 Canadian thriller, Terror Train. The same year, he played the love interest of Jacqueline Bisset's character in George Cukor's Rich and Famous.

In 1981, Bochner appeared in the miniseries, East of Eden, directed by John Steinbeck, as Aron Trask. He had to grow a beard for his role in the 1982 TV-movie, Having It All. Bochner made his stage debut that same year in the Los Angeles Production of The Wager. Bochner starred as Jake Barnes in NBC's 1984 miniseries, The Sun Also Rises, directed by Ernest Hemingway.

The year 1988 can be called as the golden year in his acting career, as he appeared in ABC's $110 million budgeted miniseries, War and Remembrance, in which he appeared as Byron Henry, a dashing U.S submarine commander. His most remembered film role was of a cocaine addict and sleazy businessman in the action blockbuster, Die Hard. His role in Die Hard was placed second on the list of "The Greatest Movie Sleazeballs of All Time" by Maxim. Film journalists have called him the finest bearded supporting character in the whole history. The same year, he played his first leading role in Martin Donovan's psychological thriller, Apartment Zero.

In 1992, Bochner broke into film direction with the short film, The Buzz The Buzz is a Malayalam business show on Kairali T >> Read More... , starring Jon Lovitz. He played a minor role in Mad at the Moon, directed by Martin Donovan. Bochner played the role of a cop investigating a series of rapes, in CBS' 1993 movie, Complex of Fear.

In 1994, his short film, The Buzz, got him a deal with 20th Century Fox, to direct, PCU. PCU, went on to become a cult hit. He appeared as a member of the Klu Klux Klan in CBS' period drama, Children of the Dust.

Bochner’s second directorial was High School High, in the year 1996. The film received mainly negative reviews from film critics, but received a good opening at the box office.

Bochner returned to acting in 1998, playing Bridget Fonda's boyfriend in the TV movie, The Break Up, directed by Paul Marcus.

In 2000, he was roped into playing Professor Solomon in John Ottman's directorial debut, Urban Legends: Final Cut. The following year, in 2001, he had a featured role in Investigating Sex.

Bochner has been deeply involved in philanthropy, working mainly for saving the environment. He is a board member of Environmental Media Association, DGA-PAC leadership council, and L.A's Green Ribbon Commission. He came up with the idea of the green seal, a stamp symbolizing the use of environmental friendly alternatives while filming. He helped in banning the use of Luan, a rainforest mahogany wood. In 2008, Time magazine voted him 'The Greenest Celebrity' of the year.
