Tim Roth is originally known as Simon Timothy. Roth was born on May 14, 1961, in Dulwich, London, United Kingdom. Tim was fathered by Ann, who had been working as an artisan and an educator, and had been mothered by Ernie, who was pursuing her career in journalism, painting and as a British Communist Party Member. Roth went to the Strand School in Tulse Hill, to complete his school days. Later, he went to the Camberwell College of Art in London, to fulfil his interests of being a modeller.

In 1982, Roth made his debut, in a TV Film "Made in Britain", where he played the role of a white supremacist. In 1986, the King of Ghetto, a novel based drama by Farukh Dhondy was also picturised on Roth where he played the character from the East End of London. He was also designated as a shy man in the film "Meantime", directed by Mike Leigh. His role as an executioner in "Stephen Frears’ The Hit", a 1985 film, helped him to bag the Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Newcomer. He went on stepping up the ladder to achieve the greatest as an actor and was offered numerous films in the decade. He also delivered a supporting role as a manservant in "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover", directed by Peter Greenaway. His work started getting famous internationally and soon he got opportunities to work on an international level in movies such as "Vincent & Theo", where he was represented as Vincent van Gogh, in the Robert Altman film. He played as Ted in the movie "Four Rooms", in 1995. In "Rob Roy", he played the role of Archibald Cunningham, which helped him to bag the nomination for the Best Supporting Actor, in Academy Awards, and also earned him the BAFTA Awards.

In 1999, he directed his first film, titled "The War Zone", picturised on the novel by Alexander Stuart. Roth fathered a son from Lori Baker in 1984, named Jack, who is also an actor. Later, Roth tied knots of marriage with Nikki Butler, who mothered two of his sons, named Timothy Hunter, who was born in 1995, and Michael Cormac, who was born in 1996. Roth is a campaigner of GPEW (Green Party of England and Wales).
