Grier featured as Eleanor Winthrop in the Showtime comedy “Linc's (1998–2000),” Kate “Kit” Porter in the Showtime drama “The L Word (2004–2009), and Constance Terry in the ABC sitcom “Bless This Mess (2019–2020)” on TV. Her performance in the animated series “Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child (1999)” was praised.

Gwendolyn Sylvia, Grier's mother, is a nurse and homemaker. While her father, Clarence Ransom Grier, Jr., is a US Air Force mechanic and technical sergeant. She was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to her parents. Grier has a younger brother and a younger sister. Her ancestors are African-American, Hispanic, Chinese, Filipino, and Cheyenne. She was reared as a Catholic, but eventually converted to Methodists.

Her family often moved during her childhood because of her father's military profession. Later, she settled in Denver, Colorado. She attended East High School, in Colorado. She took part in several theater shows and beauty pageants in Denver. Grier used the programs to fund her undergraduate fees at “Metropolitan State College.”

Pam shifted to Los Angeles, California in 1967. She began her career at American International Pictures (AIP) as a switchboard operator. Director Jack Hill discovered her. Jack Hill starred her in “The Big Doll House” (1971) and “The Big Bird Cage” (1972). Pam became a staple of early 1970s blaxploitation movies, while under contract at AIP. She played big, bold, assertive women. In Jack Hill's “Coffy (1973),” she played a nurse. The nurse seeks revenge on drug dealers in the film.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore awarded Grier an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in 2011. In the same year, she was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Science by Langston University. She developed the “Pam Grier Community Garden” and Education Center. The goal is to educate people about organic gardening, health, and nutrition. Grier's name was given to the museum's first garden in 2011.

She met comedian Freddie Prinze in 1973 while promoting her film “Coffy.” They began dating and discussed marriage. Prinze wanted her to bear his child. But she declined because of his depression and drug use. They stayed in touch after separation. She was one of the last people Prinze communicated with before committing suicide in 1977.

She was previously linked to Don Cornelius, a Soul Train announcer, Jimmie “Big Wheel Wheeler,” a boxing promoter, and basketball great Wilt Chamberlain. Grier was engaged to Kevin Evans, an executive at RCA Records, in 1998. In 1999, their relationship dissolved.

In 1988, Grier had 18 months to live after being diagnosed with stage-four cervical cancer. Eventually, she recovered and is now in remission, thanks to aggressive treatment.
