English Producer Stephanie Allain

Allain was born on the 30th of October 1959 and has established herself as an accomplished African-American producer of Independent movies. Allain was born to illustrious parents; her father Dr. Charles Allain being a biochemist and her mother Gwen Allain Miller, an acclaimed educator. Allain spent her childhood in California and received her education there itself. Following this, Stephanie went on to pursue her B.A. in English and creative writing from the University of California, in Santa Cruz.

She later followed it up by starting her film career in the Creative Artists Agency, California, a talent and sports management agency. She worked as a story analyst for high-profile production houses and major American film studios such as 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros. and finally at Columbia Pictures. Allain was one of the two pioneer African American readers in these major production houses. For this reason among many others, she was considered as influential in developing the African American community in Hollywood in the 1990’s. She was responsible for launching their careers and personally promoted Singleton’s work Boyz n the Hood.

Her intuition seemed to have worked, and Singleton acquired the Oscar’s Award nominations for the Director and the Original Screenplay category in 1991 thereby making Singleton the first African American to have ever been awarded this prestigious nomination. Her other movie pursuits which nurtured under her active supervision were Poetic Justice (1993) which won the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for the Best Original Song “Again.” Other movies produced include I Like it Like That and The Craft. In 1996, she left Columbia Pictures to join as the President of the Jim Henson Pictures and produced some children’s movies like Buddy(1997), Muppets from Space (1999) and The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland (1999). After this she left it to pursue her career 3Arts Entertainment. It was here she supervised the production of the Reggie Rock BytheWoodz Biker Boyz (2003).

It was then she endeavored on her own to establish her production house Homegrown Films which proved to be very fruitful teaming with John Singleton.
