Tamlyn Tomita

Tamlyn Naomi Tomita was born in Okinawa, Japan on January 27, 1966. She grew up in Los Angeles. She is a Japanese-American singer and actress. During World War II, her Japanese-American father was interned. He met her mother between the Korean and Vietnam Wars, while stationed in Okinawa. Her mother was half Japanese and half Filipina. When her father returned to Los Angeles, he became an LAPD officer. Tomita studied history at UCLA after graduating from Granada Hills High School, with a goal of becoming a history teacher. At UCLA, she took part in Nisei Week and she won the crown as its 1984 queen. Tomita had pivotal parts in many indie films. Her breakthrough performance was in the 1990 drama picture, Come See the Paradise.

She is also well-known for her performance in The Joy Luck Club as Waverly.
