Amit was born in India but spent his childhood in Africa with his parents. The film won the Best Cinematography and Best Film awards at the Kodak BAFTA Showcase for Shorts. It was also screened at Cannes. The film was produced by Asif Kapadia.

However, the work which earned him appreciation even more internationally was the 2013 Hindi language thriller film, ‘Monsoon Shoutout’. The movie dealt with complex human emotions and for its brilliant execution, it was screened at numerous film festivals including The Cannes. The film bagged the Thriller prize at the Brussels International Festival of Fantasy Film and the Neptac award at the Hawaii International Film Festival. The film was also nominated for different categories in many other international festivals as well.

In 2015, he directed the film Colonia. After a ‘gestation period’ of nearly eight years, he reappeared in the industry with co-writing and directing the 2021 web-series, ‘The Last Hour’ with his wife, Anupama Minz. Amit has also produced and done the screenplay of the work. The movie is said to be the eighth coloration of him with Asif Kapadia. The series streams on Amazon Prime.

Amit has acted in a couple of movies as well. He appeared in the role of a market trader in the 2001 movie The Warrior, and as Rahul in the 2004 movie Yeh Lamhe Judaai Ke.
