The director of the National Award-winning documentary ‘Amar Katha: Story of Binodini,’ Tuhinabha Majumdar is an Indian documentary filmmaker. Apart from direction, Tuhinabha Majumdar also excels in the field of writing and editing. Born and brought up in West Bengal, Tuhinabha Majumdar completed his school education from Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith, Purulia in West Bengal. Post schooling, he pursued Film Appreciation from FTII and NFAI, Pune. Further, Tuhinabha Majumdar went to Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute in West Bengal for his Post-graduation degree in Film and Video Editing in 1999. Besides filmmaking, he is also a film teacher.

He worked as an Associate Professor for Direction and Screenplay Writing at the Film and Television Institute of India. Tuhinabha Majumdar serves as the Head of Direction and Screenplay Writing at the MIT School of Film and Television, Pune. In the past, he has been the Programming Head for Television channels. In 2001, he started his journey as an independent documentary filmmaker. Later, after graduation, he served as editor and writer in several films and television shows. His 2012 documentary film ‘Midnight Bioscope,’ also known as Raater Bioscope, became a critical success and gave Tuhinabha Majumdar name and fame.

The movie fetched him the Golden Conch Award for Best Fiction Film and Best Film at the Mumbai International Film Festival 2012. In 2015, another documentary, ‘City Within The City,’ won the Silver Award at the 11th Indian Documentary Producers’ Award for Excellence. Tuhinabha Majumdar directed a documentary about the life of the renowned Bengali Stage actress NatiBinodini, who has been a theatre artist from the age of twelve, in the name ‘Amar Katha: Story of Binodini.’ After reading the autobiographies Amar Katha and Amar AbhinetriJibon of the Binodi, Tuhinabha Majumdar found it amusing and decided to make it a documentary film.

Some of Tuhinabha Majumdar’s editing works other than his projects include ‘Sengadal’ and the non-fiction television series ‘Kolkata, the City of Memories.’ He wrote the documentary ‘Hawa Mahal.’
