Neeta Lulla is a costume designer, having worked in over 300 films, since the 1990s, with noted filmmakers like
Sanjay Leela Bhansali,
Subhash Ghai, Sooraj R. Barjatya, etc. She made her debut as a film costume designer with the film ‘
Tamasha’ which had
Kimi Katkar in the lead role. Neena started as an assistant to the former Indian fashion choreographer, Jeanne Naoroji, in the late 1980’s. After gaining some experience, she took up her career independently. After few films, she followed her career with Yash Chopra’s ’
In her career spanning close to thirty years, she has received numerous awards. She won her first national award for her work in the film ‘Lamhe’(1991), ‘
Jodhaa Akbar( 2009) and Balgandharva(2012). She won four national film awards, Besides Hindi film, she also had done costume design for Tamil, Telugu and Marathi films too. She became part of Leela Sanjay Bhansali and Yash Chopra’s team. She is the most prolific costume designers in Bollywood now, winning Zee Awards, IIFA costume design award, Kingfisher fashion award, and even Bollywood Film Award. She's known for films such as ‘Khudagawah', ' Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’, ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam', 'Kochadaiyaan' and 'Rudramadevi'. Her costumes ranged from the elegantly simple(Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke) to the elaborately flamboyant (Devdas, Rudramadevi, Lamhe or Kochadaiyaan).
The celebrated visionary continued to be an artistic force with other films of
Shah Rukh Khan,
Amitabh Bachchan, Rajinikanth, and
Hrithik Roshan. Besides Bollywood films, she moved to Kollywood and Tollywood movies too, and many of her outstanding projects include ‘
Shivaji’,’Kadhalan’, ‘Kshnak Kshnam’, and ‘Jagadika Veerudu Artiloka Sundari’. The flamboyant actress
Madhuri Dixit beat the popularity of her’ Didi Tera Devar Diwana ‘ outfit though Neeta’s costumes. In the song, she dazzled in a purple satin sari with a backless blouse that became a rage in wedding ceremonies and remains an evergreen costume. For another song in the same film, Madhuri’s green and white lehenga or the pink dress with floral work was a rage amongst girls.
For a Sridevi’s film Roop Ki Rani Choron Ki Raja, the film spent Rs 10 crore on costumes and set design alone. At the same time, the designer set a trend for Rajasthani outfits worn by Sridevi for ‘Lamhe’ and won appreciation. She also had designed costumes for a Hollywood film ’One Night With
The King’ for
Omar Sharif and Peter O’Toole. Neeta Lulla tied her knot with Dr. Shyam Lulla, and the couple has a son and daughter. She was born on March 5, 1964.
