Jyoti D Tommar is a choreographer. She was from Gharwal but was born and raised in Mumbai. Jyoti belongs to a large family, including herself; they are nine sisters and one brother. Jyoti mentions in an interview that her first mentor was her eldest sister. Her sister taught Kathak to her when she was about four years old. Her sister was learning Kathak at that time, so she watched her and learned the moves. While in school and college, Jyoti participated in various dance events and other cultural activities. In 1987 in a college fest, she met with Vasundhra Mehta, a Gujarati dance teacher, who came to teach them Gujarati folk dance for the fest. Vasundhra Mehta saw Jyoti's real talent and genuine potential. She asked her to join her academy and learn dance. Jyoti agreed, but her parents asked her to go after graduation.

She received a telegram after graduation from Vasundhra Mehta and joined her. Jyoti was always attracted to Rajasthani culture. She was trained under the supervision of Late HH Rajmata Goverdhan Kumari Ji, who was Princess of Kishangarh and became Maharani of Santrampur. Jyoti was introduced to her by her sister, and she also watched her in the DD show, Jyoti met her and asked her to teach ghoomar, and Maharanisa agreed. From that day, she learned ghoomar and now teaching and carrying the legacy of Maharanisa forward.

Jyoti is also recognized for choreographing the Ghoomar song in the movie Padmavat. Along with National Award, she earned many other awards, including the Filmfare Award, Star Screen Award, Zee cine Award, IIFA Award, and Indiewood Academy Award. The accomplished choreographer is also an actor. While is was learning Gujrati folk with Vasundhra Mehta, she was asked to be part of a Gujrati musical; she got through the audition, and then again the host of the play asked her to play the lead role, she did it, the name of the show was “Awa Mumbai Mai Schaal Jawa." Jyoti has been a part of Indian TV serials, such as Pyaar Ko Ho Jane Do, Mahadev, and Kasam Se, and she played the role of Sheron in a Hindi movie, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. Jyoti D is teaching ghoomar for the last 30 years. Now she is Asst Director of the only Ghoomar Academy in the country and running with Associate Directors Dr. Pratibha Naitthani and Maharani Mandakini Kumari.
