Hema Singh is an Indian television actress famous for her portrayal of Imarti Shrivastav, the lead character in Kairi – Rishta Khatta Meetha, a soap opera that was aired on Colors TV in 2012. She played the role of a dominating mother-in-law, who is a single mother and the head of the family, used an authoritarian style of holding the family together.

Born in Lucknow and brought up in Kanpur. She’s the daughter of the renowned Hindi poet Raghuvir Sahay. Her mother is a well-read musician and she has three sisters. She was very naughty as a child and loved climbing trees and eating golgappas and kachoris.

Coming from a literary background, she always wanted to be an actor. She would get neighbours together to put up plays even as a youngster and she performed for the first time when she was only 11 years old. She came first in her college while studying at the National School of Drama, New Delhi and after a few stints as a freelance actor, joined the NSD as a professor of acting and speech. She took a two-year sabbatical from her teaching to find out more about the TV industry and bagged the part of Imarti ‘ Devi’. She prepared hard for the role, took notes everyday and even drew inspiration from her own mother-in-law to prepare for the role.

She’s also a professor at the Rashtriya Natya Vidhyalaya in Mumbai. She has worked with Shyam Benegal on stage in the past and has been a part of the serial, Bhanwar. Having experienced the inner workings of acting on the small screen, she is better equipped to train her students and lead them along the path to perfection.
