Srinivas is an Indian playback singer. He was born on November 7, 1959, and is 57 years old. He is also known as Srinivasan Doraiswamy. He is famous for lending his voice to more than 2000 songs in a variety of languages like Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil. He was born in the town of Ambasamudram, after which his family moved to Thiruvananthapuram. His guru is his aunt, Padma Narayan, and she trained him in Carnatic music right from a young age.
Apart from Carnatic music, he was profoundly interested in works of RD Burman and
Kishore Kumar, the legendary greats of Bollywood. He earned a degree in Bachelor of Technology from the Bombay University in the field of Chemical Technology. While studying, he got the opportunity to perform at various youth festivals organized by his university.Srinivas continued to opt for more conventional careers and even worked as a marketing professional for a decade.
Despite everything, he still felt the pull towards the world of music and finally abandoned everything to continue pursuing his music as a career. He attempted to make a break into the industry in 1988 under the able guidance of ‘
Ilaiyaraaja’, but it couldn’t come to be due to health issues. Once again, in 1992, when he received the same opportunity to work with the iconic ‘

Rahman and Srinivas worked in collaboration and in 1994, Srinivas moved to Chennai to be closer to Rahman’s base. He continued to give voice to various advertisement jingles and also devotional songs. Srinivas’ first commercial hit was Sorgam Enbathu Namakku in the movie ‘
Nammavar’, which was a super hit. He worked with Rahman once again in 1996, and this time he hit the jackpot. Apart from singing, Srinivas also tried his hand at music direction and was tremendously prosperous in that department too.
He made a mark in Bollywood with his Kaisi Hain Yeh from the movie ‘
Dil Chahta Hai’. He occasionally also kept dropping albums in all the languages he sang in. He feels honored to have worked in close association with Rahman right from his initial days and feels that Rahman is an irreplaceable asset to the music industry. He even featured as a judge for the singing reality show ‘Airtel Super Singers’. He says he has been influenced strongly by singers like Mehdi Hassan.
He continues to work passionately and create more music while at the same time he makes appearances on reality TV shows to scout for budding talent. His daughter, Sharanya, is his musical protégé and they have even worked together to produce Kozhai. He also has another daughter, Sunanda, who currently prefers to stay away from the limelight. After graduating, he worked as a chemical engineer for several years before finally quitting the job and deciding to pursue his life-long dream of singing. He is the father of two daughters named Sunanda and
Sharanya Srinivas. Among them, Sharanya is the elder one and is also an accomplished singer herself. In the year 1988, he approached Ilaiyaraaja, a renowned music director, and requested him to let him sing. Ilaiyaraaja complied however eventually the deal didn't materialize since he fell ill. It disheartened him. In 1992, Mani Ratnam's movie Roja released. Its music director was a newbie then name A. R. Rahman. He preferred working with new voices. The album of the film revolutionized the way people perceived music in motion pictures.
Srinivas met him and sang few ghazal that he had grown up listening. He impressed A. R. Rahman, who offered him work in Chennai. A few years later he started rendering his voice to devotional songs and jingles. He then sang Sorgam Enbathu Namakku in the motion picture Nammavar. Though the movie was a hit, it was his song Maana Madurai in Minsaara Kanavu that made him extremely famous. Since then, he has worked with composers like Bharadwaj, Deva, Ilaiyaraaja, and Vidyasagar. In fact, he has sung more than two thousand songs.
