Semmalar Annam

Semmalar Annam is an Indian Tamil actress who mainly works in the Tamil film industry. She was born on August 20, 1990. Semmalar Annam’s place of birth is Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu in India. She completed her school education at Krishnamal Higher Secondary School, Coimbatore. After that, she went to the PSG College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore, to pursue a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Visual Communication. Later, she completed her post-graduation in Mass Communication and Journalism from the same college. After completing her formal education, she went to the Stanislavsky Acting School, Chennai, to pursue a course on acting and theatre, which assisted her in stepping into the Tamil film industry. Her father’s name is A. V. Karuppasamy, while her mother’s name is Boovathy. She is the elder sister of brother Samaran.

During her post-graduate studies in Mass Communication and Journalism at the PSG College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore, Semmalar Annam performed many street plays for environmental and social causes. Her college professor CR Jayaprakash organized many of these street plays under the college Eco Club. These street plays helped bring a huge awareness and positive change to society. She has also acted and directed in more than fifteen short films during her college days. Semmalar Annam’s debut film, “Malarmathi,” is based on a sexually abused orphan. The film received the best director & best film award at Legend 2010, a state-level short film festival organized by the Visual Communication department of Sathyabama University, Chennai.

In 2021, she appeared as Annam in the film, “Sennai,” for which she won several awards, including Best Actress at the Port BlairInternational Film Festival, Best Actress at the Tagore International Film Festival, and Rising Star Emerging Actress at the Toronto Tamil International Film Festival. The same year, she appeared in the Malayalam film “Mmmmm,” directed by Vijesh Mani. As a director, she worked on several films, including “Konangai Widow Marriage” (2010), “Malarmathi” (2010), and “First Rain” (2019). She was also the winner of a Tamil reality show, “Sagalakala Vallavan” at Kalaignar TV in 2012 for her excellence in acting, dancing, and singing.
