He was born on 8 January 1931. He received one Anandalok Award, five Filmfare Awards, seven BFJA Awards, and four National Awards. He died on 4 July 2022. Here is the list of Bengali films directed by him.

1. Chander Bari

The film Chander Bari shows the reality of a middle-class joint family. The Sanyals are the family. It consists of a grandfather, his son, daughter-in-law, their two children, a daughter, and a son. The daughter-in-law behaves like the rules of the house. They live together in a bungalow in Bhawanipur. They have more servants than family members. The eldest son returns there from London, UK. He went there for his business work. He returns with a wife and her child. This is her second marriage. Her previous husband got killed. Now the mother-in-law cannot accept her. Problem arises.

2. Bhalobasar Onek Naam

The film Bhalobasar Onek Naam is about romance. Bimal is a young man. He comes to Bilaspur village. He joins as a school teacher. All the people there love him a lot. The film Bhalobasha Bhalobasha is a romantic film. Keya is a young girl. She goes to college and music classes in Kolkata. She stays in a girl’s hostel Her parents stay in Bihar. Arup is a businessman. He works in dealing poultry. He also helps poor people. He gives them free medicine and education. His mother was a famous singer. She died of cancer. His father left her to another woman when he was in his mother’s womb. One day Keya fights with him when he comes to give poultry in the hostel. Later she finds that he is also a good singer like his mother. They both fall in love.

4. Dadar Kirti

The film Dadar Kirti is based on a novel written by Saradindu Bandhopadhyay of the same name. The novel was unpublished. Kedar Chatujye is sent to Bihar at his uncle’s house as a punishment in Bihar. His father is angry with him because he could not pass his B.A. exam even after three attempts. He is a simple mimed boy. His cousin and his friends make fun of him. There he falls in love with Saraswati. She is a strong and serious girl. She also falls in love with him as he is a simple boy. But his cousin creates a misunderstanding between them. But in the end, both marry each other.

5. Jadi Jantem

The film Jadi Jantem is based on the novel Nagchampa, written by Narayan Sanyal. Koushik Mitra is an engineer. He takes the job of a taxi driver because he was unable to find a suitable job. Sujata is a scientist’s daughter. They both fall in love. Aggarwal is a famous man there. He gets killed. One day someone traps her. She is accused of that murder. P.K. Basu is a Barrister. He is her lawyer. He helps her solve the case. They find out the real culprit. Now this follows a dangerous twist.

6. Fuleswari

The film Fuleswari is based on the novel of the same name, written by Bibhutibhushan Mukhopadhyay. Fuleswari is a young woman. She lives in a village. Brindaban is a man who one day comes to that village. She falls in love with him. She wants to marry him. But she comes to know that he is involved in some crime. Then the story gets complicated.

7. Thagini

The film Thagini is based on a story written by Subodh Ghosh of the same name. Rajen Mukherjee cheats on his cashier friend, Haripada. Banku is his assistant. They break the office locker to take out cash. They are caught. They need money for Haripada’s daughter, Karabi’s marriage. But they are sent to jail. They come out after two years. They have no way to earn money. Now they start looting. Karabi now marries a man with Haripada and Banku’s help. Then she takes away all the jewelry of her husband and runs away. Police cannot catch them. They go to Kolkata. There she falls in love with Amit. He is Rajen’s son.

8. Shriman Prithviraj

The film Shriman Prithviraj shows the backdrop of the Indian Freedom movement. Rashik Lal is a young boy. He is notorious. All the people in the village and his father is fed up with him. He fantasizes about his love for Prithviraj Chauhan. He thinks that he is the great warrior who fought against Alexander the Great. He sometimes thinks of himself as Prithviraj. It is shown comically. He is suspended from his school because he fights with Anta, his classmate. His father thinks that if he gets married then he would become stable. He gets married to an aristocrat’s daughter. Then his life changes.

9. Kuheli

The film Kuheli is a suspense thriller film. Sheba Mitra is a woman who comes to Nijhumgarh. It is a remote hill town. She would work as the governess of Ranu. She is a small girl. Shankar Roy is the owner of the haunted house, Raykuthi. Sheba comes to know that everything is mysterious there. She tries to know every history of that bungalow. She learns that seven years ago, two people were murdered there. She starts seeing paranormal activities. She then comes to know about the main culprit.

Hirendranath, also known as Hiru is a young man from Calcutta. He goes to visit his aunt in a village. He meets Kumudini also known as Kumu there. She is a simple girl. She lives with her uncle. She lost her father when she was young. They fall in love. Her uncle does not want them to get married. Then he returns and marries Surama. But they are still lonely. He one day goes back to the same village. Now Kumu is also married. They still love each other. But they cannot be together.
