The music maestro who won the National Award for the fourth time, this time for the “Best Background Score”, for his 1000th film Thaarai Thappatai, did not attend the 63rd National Award Ceremony. The reason behind this is the composer’s strong disagreement with the categories of the award. The composer says that earlier the National Award was given for the Best Music Composition- this ensured appreciation for a holistic work of good quality. Currently, by segregating it to sub-divisions the honour of the prestigious National Award is being given away to people who have done only half their work well. A composer should work on the melody line, the background score and the recording- when all these departments have commendable quality, only then the person can be honoured as the Best Music Composer. This categorization can be taken in the wrong spirit too- the government will recognize and appreciate people who have done some incomplete work well- which the composer feels is not the intent of the National Award.
