‘Amaran’ is a multilingual project backed by Kamal Haasan’s production banner, Raaj Kamal Films International. The film revolves around Major Mukund Varadarajan, who sacrificed his life in a raid against the terrorists in the Kashmir Valley. He was rewarded with Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, in 2014.

So, what is the cause of concern? Despite the rave reviews for the teaser, a self-proclaimed Tamilian group maintains that this film reeks of hypernationalism and Islamophobia. The same echoes in some tweet campaigns online. This is not the first time that a project associated with Kamal Haasan is accused of the same.

While ‘Amaran’ is yet to hit the theaters, ‘Vishwaroopam’ was banned from a release in Tamil Nadu despite a clearance from the Censor Board. Following multiple requests, including a personal apology from Kamal Haasan, the film was finally allowed to be released in Tamil Nadu on 7 February 2013.
