Coltrane was born in Austin, to Genevieve and Bruce Salmon, a composer. In 2001, at the young age six, Coltrane was chosen by filmmaker Richard Linklater to perform the title character of classes of the movie Boyhood; Linklater required to make an unusual film that would bestow a boy's growing of age, but with the actors passing up or developing on screen. Coltrane and additional members of the cast were filmed intermittently for many days at a time between 2002 and 2013 when Coltrane turned 19; they did 45 days of filming collectively.
