Plot

This film follows the life of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. It starts in the year 1925, when Frida meets with an accident on a bus that changes her life forever. To help her cope, her father brings her a canvas for her to paint. Thus begins her story.

As she begins to discover her love and perhaps inherent skill in painting, she decides to take her work to a well-known artist named Diego Rivera. She asks him for an honest critique of her paintings. Diego falls completely in love with her and her work, and eventually the two of them get married.

With their wedding begins the adventure that is Frida's life. Her story encapsulates joy, adventure, heartbreak, disease, betrayal and everything in between. From her tumultuous marriage and subsequent remariage to Rivera, to her struggles with health, to her dramatic life, this film and Frida's life are nothing short of crazy.

Star Performance

Salma Hayek delivers an excellent portrayal of the star of this movie, Frida Kahlo. By no means is that an easy role to play. The character of Frida Kahlo is a free spirit in the truest sense of the word. She is anarchic and bold, dramatic and headstrong. But Salma Hayek brings Frida to life, and her portrayal is everything that Frida was known to be.

Another job-well-done is that of Alfred Molina, who plays Diego Rivera, a burly, entitled man. Diego is almost repulsive, as described by Frida herself, yet there is an inexplicable way in which he wins over the hearts of not only Frida but several other women. Alfred Molina had a truly well-done take on this character.

The film is supported by a strong cast of Antonio Banderas, Mia Maestro, Ashley Judd, Edward Norton He is known to be one of the actors that possess p >> Read More... and other talents. They only add to the brilliance of this film.

Analysis

Frida is a bold, dynamic and creative masterpiece. The best part about this film is that it doesn't hold back. The lives of artists are beyond interesting, but portrayals of the same often appear lifeless and boring. But this film breaks all bounds of conventionality to portray the unconventional Frida, who was unbothered by society and its rules.

Some of the scenes, especially, portray this aspect well, such as Diego shooting a gramophone, which is something that really did happen in real life. The way this film takes on real moments from Frida's life and incorporates them into the narrative makes it all the more interesting to watch.

The film's portrayal of ideologies and lifestyles that were considered radical or unconventional at the time is also quite well done. Frida and Diego's loyalty to communism, Frida's bisexuality, and other political narratives are openly explored. However some scenes and narratives may also come across as exaggerated and untrue, such as the plot surrounding Frida and Diego's fidelity to one another, or Frida's apparent affair with an Italian photographer. Yet, these scenes are still acceptable as part of the film's creative liberty.

The cinematography of the film is fabulously handled by Rodrigo Pieto. The glitz, the glamour, the intrigue of an artist's life, especially one as out there as Frida Kahlo, has been captured perfectly in the glitter and the colors of the film's expressive visuals.

What's There?

  • Amazing plot
  • Great visuals
  • Great Acting

What's Not There?

  • May seem exaggerated at times

Verdict

The film Frida perfectly captures the essence of Frida Kahlo's life and blows it onto the big screen. It is a fun and entertaining watch, one that should not be missed.
