CAST & CREW
The English movie The Great Gatsby hit the screens in 2013. The movie is an epic and centers romance. The movie is based on F Scott Fitzgerald’s novel that was released in 1925. Baz Luhrmann directed the movie and wrote the screenplay. Leonardo Dicaprio does the role of Jay Gatsby in the movie. There are other characters in the movie as Tobey Maguire and Elizabeth Debicki. There were mixed reviews for the movie. The actors in the movie were appreciated for their performances. But, other aspects of the movie as editing and soundtrack were criticized. The movie won some awards at the Academy Awards. Tobey Maguire has done the role of Nick Carraway. Leonardo Dicaprio has played the role of Jay Gatsby. Carey Mulligan has done the role of Daisy. Joel Edgerton has played Tom in the movie.
The movie opens up with a scene showing Nick Carraway relating his father’s lessons to always observe the good in others. The camera eyes revolve around the Perkins Sanitarium. Nick is consulting a doctor. The doctor maintains a record that reveals that Nick is alcoholic with some other character problems. Nick has seen the good in only one person who is none other than Gatsby. Nick is from the Midwest and Jay Gatsby, his neighbor, allures Nick into the extravagant life. But, the movie scenes unfold in such a manner that, very soon Nick finds out what it costs to be rich. Obsessive and mentally disturbed behavior finally leads to a sad end.
The movie tries to capture the emotions but proves to overload the audiences’ sensations. The movie is trying to touch your heart and does not give much work for the brain. The director has not understood the original story fully. The movie is a poor imitation of America’s one of the best literature work done. Maybe, the director has made good the character of Jay Gatsby. But, as a stoic onlooker, Nick should have made out the sordid realities of rich life. The director has failed to chisel the character of Nick in a manner that moves the audiences.
Leonardo DiCaprio has done well his role of a charismatic Gatsby in the movie. Maguire also does her character well as the admiring neighbor. Carey Mulligan’s role as Daisy lacks the fire in it. She does not help in adding vigor to the movie as the character Gatsby does. Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan makes a special appearance in this flick.
Verdict: Some may turn up at theaters with curiosity to find out how the novel has been made into a movie. But, only disappointment is left for audiences.
