Plot Analysis:

After DHOL, director Priyadarshan turned his hands to a horror-comedy type of movie, and thus, he came up with Bhool Bhulaiya. Bhool Bhulaiya means ‘maze’. The story circulates around a psychotic patient who is a victim of a psychological disease called ”Dissociative Identity Disorder”. Analyzing the complexity of the plot, the movie can be categorized into the Bollywood horror genre. Akshay Kumar’s hilarious dialogues and character twisted the plot into a lighter antagonism.

The story lies in an ancestral domicile where a conservative joint family lives. The US return son of the landlord, Siddarth, is their family pride. The plot begins when Siddarth’s friend, a psychologist, arrives at the mansion in an auto from a different state. The family, busy with Sid’s marriage preparations, are surprised when Siddarth arrives with his already married wife, Avni. The mansion is preserved with ancestral decors and Avni, being enthusiastic to explore them, ends up being a victim of mental disorder. Avni finds a locked room on the third floor. Everybody in their family warned Avni to stay out of reach from that room, but Avni being extremely enthusiastic about the history of the locked room, one night breaks into the room. She finds a mirror, some classical dance dress, jewellery, and a painting of the girl whose things those belong to. The sound of ghungroos escalated all over the mansion, but nobody was able to find out the source until that day, when Sid’s psychologist friend unwinds the mystery behind it.

The story inculcated its viewer about a disease called “Dissociative Identity Disorder”, where a person forgets his/her own identity and pretends to be someone else. The hilarious yet serious role of Akshay Kumar, and extremely different character of Vidya Balan was the sale tag of the movie. The movie hit the box office with 840 million.
