CAST & CREW
Kathakali is another Pongal release that has been in the limelight for quite some time. Let’s see how this Vishal-Pandiraj combination works out.
How a small event changes the course of life of Vishal forms the crux of the film.
Vishal has the knack in him to play such roles and in Kathakali, he has done an excellent job. He fits the role to the T. Catherine Theresa, has been pitiably wasted in this movie; she is just used to showcase the love element. The supporting cast including Karunas has done their job well.
Some movies have a novel storyline, but they fall short of expectations due to poor execution. And again, some movies have an ordinary story, but the way in which they are executed is commendable. Kathakali belongs to the second category. Pandiraj, who is known for making films on children, has for a change, experimented with the thriller genre. And this movie has only two songs.
The movie has a balanced dosage of romance, humor, and action.
It ‘s heartening to see that the songs gel well with the tempo of the movie.
The movie makes for a good watch even in its short duration.
Cinematography by Balasubramaniem is excellent in this movie.
The onscreen chemistry of the lead pair is refreshing.
The movie doesn’t have the usual elements of a pucca potboiler. For example, the hero is not glorified throughout the movie.
Thankfully the movie doesn’t drag and tells things in a crisp manner.
What’s not there?
Hip Hop Thamizha’s music is average.
The second half could have been better.
A good screenplay, convincing direction of Pandiraj, and a marvelous performance by Vishal makes this movie a one-time watch.
