Vishwanath Jadhav, born Pandit Vishwanathbuwa Jadhav, was an Indian classical khayaal singer and composer of the pre-independence era. He trained under Nissar Hussain Khan from the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana from 1906 to 1910. From 1910, he notably became Ustad Abdul Karim’s disciple, the man who founded the Kiranagharan style of singing until Karim’s demise in 1937. Vishwanath was born on 5th October 1885 in Hupari, Kohlapur district in Bombay. His father was Balwantrao Jadhav, and his mother was Balabai Jadhav. He had three sons – Pandit Baburao V. Jadhav, Pandit Rajaram V. Jadhav, and Pandit Pandurang V. Jadhav, who went on to become accomplished classical singers.

Vishwanath was a celebrated musical figure among the native royalty. He was a court musician in the princely state of Kohlapur, appointed by Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj in the 1920s. He performed for Mysore State and Sangli State many times, and Maharaja Krishna Raja Wodiyar IV of Mysore even gave Vishwanath the title of “Proudh Gandharva.” He composed music during the early talkie era of the Indian cinema. He was the music composer for India’s first sound film, Gangavataran, written and directed by Dadasaheb Phalke, famously known as the father of Indian cinema, in 1937.
