2024 is far from a swansong for Indian cinema. While Tamil cinema is experiencing another dry spell, their counterparts from Telugu, Kannada, or even Hindi didn't fare better.
Yet, what surprises many is the recent spate of successes in Malayalam cinema. March has not even set in, and Malayalam cinema has already delivered a hattrick of box office successes in February. Be it Premalu, Bramayugam, or even Manjummel Boys, every film has hit the bullseye.
Premalu is now a massive blockbuster, earning almost 60 crores on a budget of 3 crores. On the other hand, Mammootty’s much-awaited horror film ‘Bramayugam’ has turned out to be a super hit, earning almost 50 crores overall, compared to a budget of 27 crores.
This is even more crucial for Malayalam cinema since post-COVID it has been facing a severe crisis. From hundreds of Malayalam films released annually, only a few were profitable.
