7. John Malkovich

John Malkovich is an eminent and award-winning actor, producer, director and fashion designer. He was born on December 9, 1953 at Christopher, Illinois in U.S. to Daniel Leon Malkovich and Joe Anne. He was raised up in the South Main Street at Benton, Illinois. John studied at Logan Grade School and later attended Webster Junior High School. He also went to a public high school in Benton, the Benton Consolidated High School. When he was in high school, he used to play in several plays and Carousel. John is also an active member of a church group and they sang in community events and churches. He is also a member of a local theatre where he was co-starred in a satirical play, America Hurrah by Jean-Claude van Itallie in year 1972. When he’s about to graduate high school, he went to Eastern Illinois University but later on, he transferred to Illinois State University with a major in theatre. 

John became a member of Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company in 1976. In 1980, he shifted to New York to perform in True West, a play by Sam Shepard where he received the Obie Award. He was also part of A Streetcar Named Desire in early 1982. John also directed the revival of Balm in Gilead by Lanford Wilson, which was co-produced by Steppenwolf. John got another Obie Award for this and a Drama Desk Award. He was debuted in Broadway in Death of a Salesman together with Dustin Hoffman. He got an Emmy Award for bagging the role of Biff when the play was converted in television and aired on CBS in year 1985. 

One of John’s first film appearance was from the comedy film, A Wedding in 1978 where he played a small role together with Terry Kinney and Laurie Metcalf. His first starring film was from the drama film, Places in the Heart where he essayed the role of Mr. Will. John was nominated for the first time for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Award for his role in the film. He also acted as Al Rockoff in the 1984 British film, The Killing Fields. He also appeared in films like Empire of the Sun by Steven Spielberg and the 1987 film, The Glass Menagerie which was based on the Tennessee Williams’ play with the same title. Few years after, he gained more popularity after essaying the role of the ominous and sensual, Vicomte de Valmont in the historical drama film, Dangerous Liason in 1988.


John was featured in the film adaptation of the novella, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck in 1992. He also appeared as Mitch Leary, an assassin who have a deep intention of killing the United States’ President in the thriller film, In the Line of Fire. John received another nomination in the Oscars for his performance in the film. He played as John Horatio Malkovich in the fantasy comedy film, Being John Malkovich by Charlie Kaufman. He also made a cameo appearance on another film by Kaufman entitled, Adaptation from which he appeared as himself while filming the Being John Malkovich. John’s directorial debut, The Dancer Upstairs was launched in year 2002. Some of his recent films are Beowulf, Changeling, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and more.


Besides acting and directing, he also hosted the three episodes of Saturday Night Live. The first episode was in January 1989 and the musical guest at that time was Anita Baker, the next episode happens on October 1993 with Billy Joel and the third episode was in December 2008 with T.I and guest appearances by Molly Sims, Jamie-Lynn Sigler and the very popular, Justin Timberlake. In 2002, John started Mrs. Mudd, a fashion company and it releases his very own men’ s clothing collection. The Uncle Kimono which was enclosed in the international press and the Technobohemian. Both were designed by John Malkovich himself.


In 2008, he played the main lead in The Great Buck Howard together with Tom Hanks and his daughter, Colin Hanks. In 2009, he did a Nespresso ad along with George Clooney. He also played as Quentin Turnbull in the Western film, Jonah Hex. He also directed the play, A Celebration of Harold Pinter in 2011. 

John Malkovich got married to Glenne Headly and later, they had divorce when the actor became involved with the popular actress, Michelle Pfeiffer. Subsequently, John met his partner, Nicoletta Peyran while filming The Sheltering Sky in year 1989. The couple have two children namely, Loewy and Amandine. John is also eloquent in speaking French language since he lived in Southern France for over 10 years where he also worked in a theatre.
