Plot

The film revolves around three people: Raviraj Varma, Chiranjeev Vashishth, and Mitali Chauhan. Years after calling it quits, Chiranjeev and Mitali meet again unexpectedly. However, Chiranjeev also meets Raviraj, who is Mitali’s new boyfriend. At the same time, the three are stuck in an apartment, thanks to the national lockdown imposed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The three soon come face to face with each other, and also learn that sometimes letting go is harder than holding on…

Star Performances

The few saving graces for this movie are the technical aspects and some acting performances.

For all the flaws of this film, the actors have ensured that at least their performances look far from unconvincing.

Analysis

COVID-19 has undoubtedly changed the world completely. The time before early 2020 and post-COVID would never be the same. Using this very dichotomy, Shankar Srikumar decided to explore the impact of the pandemic and the subsequent lockdown on human relationships, through ‘Alpha Beta Gamma’.

Now it isn’t that films haven’t been made on the pandemic before in India. However, they have been far from realistic, and they’re either as bland as ‘ Unpaused Unpaused is a Hindi-language anthology web series >> Read More... ’ or ‘India Lockdown’, or as polarized as ‘Bheed’ or ‘ The Vaccine War Click to look into! >> Read More... ’.

So, what makes ‘Alpha Beta Gamma’ different from the rest? Two things: there are very few characters, and most of the setup is restricted to an apartment. On that note, full marks to writers Shankar and Menka. The visuals are also apt for a movie of this nature, trying to make the audience feel as claustrophobic as the protagonists in the film.

In terms of taking a risk, the makers have done a fine job, and so have the actors. However, when it comes to execution, the end product is not that impressive. There is no focus on the emotional attachment between the characters, and at times, it feels like an amateur school play, where the actors are merely reciting their lines. Nothing more, nothing less. However, the acting performances somehow try to make up for the lack of a clear and crisp narrative

Verdict

‘Alpha Beta Gamma’ is a film that chose an unconventional path. You couldn’t expect much from it, but the film does deliver in terms of taking risks. Had it not been for a bland screenplay, the actors did deliver an intriguing performance. You can watch it if you have a taste for something unconventional.
